Biodiversity training workshop

As part of the BID project, ‘Mobilizing biodiversity information from the Kenya Wildlife Service’, a biodiversity training workshop for Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) researchers was held. All partners related to the project were invited to participate in the workshop. Using a mixture of discussions, group presentations and training sessions, the workshop covered multiple topics in both theoretical and applied settings.

The workshop was aimed at training participants in tools that can be used to handle spatial data and mobilize biodiversity information collected by field scientists.

Covering specific skill needs, topics were selected to train participants on how to use GIS and remote sensing, assess the status of both spatial and non-spatial biodiversity information in the KWS and analyse the problems and opportunities that the biodiversity information should be addressing to enhance wildlife conservation.

Topics covered during the workshop included:

  • GIS training using QGIS software
  • Training in image processing using Land Impact Tool
  • Introduction to Ornithology with training given by Nature Kenya
  • Introduction to Biodiversity Informatics which was taught by the National Museums of Kenya.
  • Introduction to GIS & Remote Sensing and Assessment of GIS needs
  • Biodiversity information management: Problems and Opportunities analysi
  • Biodiversity information user needs assessment
  • Introduction to Bioinformatics

Presentations from the workshop are available in the mid-term narrative report.
